Lighting Setup for Dark Still Life Food Photography

My go-to setup for dark still life food photography is almost always the same. There are always a few alterations, but for the most part I use a one light setup with the aid of a bounce card.

The main elements.

  1. Use a strip box with a honeycomb grid. Place it to the side and slightly behind the fruit. The light should setup high, and angle down and over, so that the opposite side of the fruit isn’t completely black.

  2. Bring in a bounce card, in this case just some foam core, to lift that shadow even more, and ensure both sides of the fruit are lit.
